Why I Meditate
TM and the Creative Mind
For the past twenty five years, Transcendental Meditation (TM) has been a cornerstone of my creative practice. I was fortunate to learn from Thom Knowle, a gifted teacher who trained with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi - the same master who taught The Beatles.
TM isn’t just about calm; it’s about clarity. Think of your mind like a bottle of muddy water - shake it and it clouds up, just like our thoughts. But sit still, and the sediment begins to settle. Meditation allows that clarity to return, revealing stillness beneath the noise.
Another image I love: the blue sky. It’s always there - but often obscured by wispy clouds (our passing thoughts and anxieties). TM helps us reconnect with that pure consciousness, rather than getting lost in the weather.
There’s real science behind it too - studies show TM reduces anxiety, boosts cognitive function, and even improves sleep efficiency. Countless prolific creative luminaries like Paul McCartney, Jerry Seinfeld and Clint Eastwood are lifelong advocates.
TM has sharpened my senses, deepened my empathy and made me a more intuitive creative.
Upon waking, often my thoughts race like a herd of wild horses.
Meditation lets me saddle them, hitch them to a wagon, and choose where to go.
